I don’t know if you’d call it racism, or not, but the ‘issue’ of race in this election has never been so apparent, at least to me, as when all of the brou-ha-ha over the guest priest at Obama’s church broke out.
I’m white, female, middle-class, reasonably educated, and I thought the man was funny as hell. I also thought the newscasters and pundits were out of their minds making such a fuss over it….And when Obama was put into the awful position of having to denounce the man, I abjectly realized how far apart we still are concerning ‘color’ in our society.
Obama got it….the humor….and he also ‘got it’ that the man was making commentary about global attitudes and not Hillary, specifically…it was ‘black-inside-humor’…not intended for the uninitiated….yet he had to pretend it was something it wasn’t….and denounce what he had to pretend it was…what a load of crap that is…but it is the reality of being ‘post racism’…..
Clearly most journalist’s and newscaster’s sense of humor is ‘pigment challenged’. And those who are themselves persons of color, get caught in this horrible web of having to pretend to be ‘pigment challenged’ because it just isn’t politically correct, or economically safe, to be too ‘black’…….
So we all pretend….and in the meantime, a good man, who has a very funny, George Carlinesque, sense of humor, got hurt by the reality of our ‘post racism’ world….Which, from my perspective, is still dominated by the accents, speech patterns, mores, and yes, sense of humor, of the wonder-bread class…..
